Darrell placed a hidden HS with a bazooka in the paved "entrance" hex with 2 A-T mines on the next road hex (orchard). The other 3 A-T mines were hidden on the unpaved road "entrance" hex. The MMG was located behind the roadblock with a covering squad north of the paved road and a HS south of the unpaved road. The leader, one squad and DC were concealed in the chapelle itself.
I loaded my squads as normal, but they were not able to scrounge the MGs before entry, which delayed the dm HMG's entry by three turns. I planned to overrun the HIP bazooka, but it hit my lead halftrack with the lowest possible DR. (Actually, it should have missed if I had remembered the +1 limited LOS DRM!) Unfortunately for me, the halftrack was turned into a burning wreck. I advanced a full squad into close combat with the HS. I eliminated him at 2-1, but he eliminated my squad with a "2" DR!
My HS in the SPW 251/sMG took turn #3 to scrounge the dm HMG after moving adjacent to the roadblock on turn #2. (I also discovered that the SPW 251/sMG halftrack comes with an inherent 2-4-7 HS which is noted on the next page of the chapter H notes.) I lost one halftrack to the mines on the unpaved road, but another made it through them to overrun an American squad, who passed his MC. I made the stupid mistake of moving the halftrack off of him and stopping in the next hex. I should have held him in melee instead. The SPW 251/sMG malfunctioned when I took a very stupid shot (6FP at +5 DRM).
The last two possible chances I had to win were blown when my 9-1 leader and squad could have split up to force the broken units in the chapelle to surrender. Instead I kept the stack together and the broken units routed safely away. The leader and squad engaged another American squad in close combat, where the American rolled another "2" to eliminate both that stack too. (The American gained an 8-0 leader as well.) These events left only an SS HS and rifle HS with a HMG to eliminate too many dispersed units.
I played the Germans reasonably well, but the close combat losses were severe when coupled with losing the halftrack and HS early. I do not regret using the halftrack to attempt the overrun (6FP instead of 8FP), but I may have been better off to have used an unloaded halftrack for the overrun. I could have loaded HSs into the other halftracks (assuming the SPW 251/sMG could carry 9PP in addition to the inherent HS.)
