My opponent was Tycho Granville who was also subscribed to this list until recently when his companies email went from bad to inoperable. Hopefully they'll have their new and improved version online soon and he'll be back.
I played the Germans and up until the start of the first turn I was thinking more about the exit victory conditions than I was the CVP victory conditions. I set the majority of my units up on board 4 with one squad on 33Y10 to deny concealment to his units in the buildings on board 33. I had two roughly equal sized groups, one grouped about 4Y9 and one around 4Y2. I intended to prep fire with two large stacks and then quickly move forward with the rest of my squads. Two ineffective fire attacks later I found myself paying a lot more attention to the CVP victory conditions. :-) This was a pattern that haunted me throughout the scenario -- nearly all my fire attacks involving more than 4FP were ineffective; most of the damage I did was caused by attacks of 4FP or less.
By the second turn I'd gotten so frustrated with my crummy die rolling that I made a bunch of suicide moves and actually got away with a couple of them. I also managed to get one of my leaders KIA'd. In an attempt to keep my die rolls somewhat average I managed to roll three HOB results on morale checks which battle hardened two squads and generated two heros. About this time I nailed his 6+1 leader on the move through a narrow line of sight that Tycho hadn't noticed. I figured that my killing the colonel off before he could do any damage to the Poles was probably in Tycho's favor too.
On the second turn (I think) Tycho withdrew his units from the farm complex on board 33. I thought he left there a bit prematurely, but he didn't want to get his men there encircled and captured. My infantry on board four had managed to advance as far as 4R1, 4R5 and 4R7 and since the 33R7 farm complex was now unoccupied my armor entered on 33GG6 and was able to run by the farm and orchard with little fear of attack by the ATR's. Several of Tycho's Uhlan squads were busy entrenching in the woods around 4I5 and 33J10. He hadn't yet realized that I had no intention of going for the exit victory conditions and that helped me as it took a number of his best squads off the front lines. He only used his horses for transportation, dismounting and leaving them behind before he came within LOS and range of my guns. That was probably prudent but I was disappointed. I'd hoped to have a chance to mow down some charging calvary. :-)
Around turn 4 I managed to capture the 4P6 and 4P8 buildings but it didn't take Tycho long to push me back out of the 4P6 building. I managed to capture several squads, some because they were disrupted and some by CC capture attempts. My tanks had set themselves up around 33F2 which left them out of range of all Tycho's weapons except the ATR's and his MMG. He tried to kill one of my armored cars with the MMG but soon managed to break it. I also managed to break and then disable the MA on two of my AFV's which got them recalled. He made a number of attempts to kill my tanks with his ATR but never quite managed to nail one. By turn five the game was getting very close. I had accumulated only two CVP more than Tycho, but I had captured four full squads and that put me within two points of a win. One of my heros, now wounded, finally managed to save the day for me. Tycho had a stack topped by his 9-2 leader in 33N9, and I had the hero and a half squad in 4O1. At the end of my turn I advanced the hero to 33O10 and he miraculously survived a massive prep fire attack from the adjacent 9-2 stack. The hero and one of the tanks then encircled the stack in my defensive fire phase, and one of the armored cars finally managed to break the leader and a half squad. The leader and half squad were then forced to surrender to my wounded hero. Tycho conceded at that point as I could easily fall back and protect my captured units until the end of the game at little risk to my forces.
In retrospect I have a hard time imagining the German winning through the exit victory conditions. If he manages that he probably also managed the CVP victory conditions. I found the victory conditions somewhat peculiar because, in my opinion, they really don't match the situation description and aftermath very well. In the actual situation the Polish infantry was trying to break contact and escape while the victory conditions encourage them to stand and fight. Victory conditions and SSRs are usually crafted to encourage the players to act in a similar manner to the way the actual forces involved acted.
