Played this scenario vs. Steve Garvey FTF from Hastings MI
Had great pizza, conversation while doing this....he's a good FTF player
Hope this isn't too disconnected for you gentle readers out there in ASL land...
LOVED playing this one for the first time in years....
I was the Russians--it was cool just SCOOPING the MMCs out of my plano to setup for this scenario.
The Germans pre game roll saw 6/8 squads BREAK....I said PSHAAW...and we started again.
2nd time, only 1/8 failed....he made the mistake of not being compact enough in his set up, and sent Mr. 9-2 over to rally the slacker that failed.
MEANWHILES, he starts getting up the hill.....
My 9-1 with 2MMGs and squads to man it, ZAP the squad toting the MMG up the hill, but lose ROF in the process (I rolled a 4 on the 4 table, minus 3 for leadership, FFMO/FFNAM). SO...he scurried up the hill with the 8-1, radio, and squad....
My prep sees me firing at the 8-1 observer and friend.
I roll another 4, this time only a 1MC.
8-1 HOB Hero creates...so now he's still a 8-1 but he's singing DEUTSCHLAND DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES everywhere he goes.
YUCK....
I fire again and roll a 12--then random select BOTH MMGs....double yuck....
I then start the general movement of 46 squads across board 4, double timing as much as possible.
Roughly, I had 10 squads on the North edge, 10 squads in the center, and everyone else in on the south edge of the map.
My plan was to get across that open ground ASAP, and close with him such that his ARTY couldn't zap me.
I gave him the play balance ie 150MM OBA instead of 100 oba....
His first arty draw--RED.....
hits a squad here, another there, but hey, I'm not stacking when moving and have 46 moving squads to lose...so what's the loss, right?....
His turn 2.
He gets the 75L (towed) up to a level 3 hex.....but can't quite unload yet....
His panzers arrive N.edge, beat up my infantry, and start trying to get up the hill....
ARTY contact roll--11 YUCK.... that in fact is the story of the scenario for him
He only got 1 FFE out...more on that in a bit....
My turn 2.
Repair attempts on MMGs.
Break one, fix the other...ok, I guess I'm even, right?
So, now the MMGs are doing these 1 minus 1 shots, and 1 straight against level 3 hexes.....
My tanks enter...
one HD to the 4z10 (I think that's it)
one to HILL 538 on board 3...
one in motion...
others in fire support hexes 13-18 away from targets of opportunity on hill 621.
He fires a PZIV, breaks the gun.
Another PzIVIV however, begins his career, in a humble way, getting ACQ on one of my T-34s in a wheatfield hex on board 4. THIS PzIV crew would earn itself many accolades before getting gacked by me.
Turn 3, this evil german tank...
ROF/CH vs. the T-34 in the wheatfield (it's on fire still probably, b/c the TK was a 3)
ROF hit vs. the HD T-34 in 4z10....4 on the TK so he's KIA... (19 hex shot too)
ROF hit vs. a 447 five hexes away. 14 table roll was a snakes....
He Fires one last time with his MA, hits and breaks a squad to end his torrent of killing...but that's turn 3...
MY turn 2 continues with me almost clearing board 4, him FINALLY getting contact, and a good draw ie black card....
I made Steve chuckle when I see the spotter round amidst about 10 of my squads and tell him that my troops are doing the same thing that cockroaches do in the kitchen when you turn the lights on ie SCATTERING LIKE HELL....
His turn 3.
Ok, I already cited the impressive PzIV killing machine.
But really, things went my way otherwise.
IF he had called the arty down as HARASSING FIRE, my tank that was in the blast zone short of a CH would have laughed, but he would have caught 12 squads inside the blast area
As is, he zapped 2 squads, and 3 others laughed off his attempt to get me....
AND, I in turn...
HIT and then rolled a 3 on the effect vs. his 75L...
CREW is KIA, PAK is broken.....
broke squad manning the HMG...
broke squad manning a LMG
broke a second squad manning a LMG.
broke a third squad manning their rifles (gotcha...)
Seriously, did a LOT of 4, 6, 8, and 12 shots...I really had my INF on him and he in turn hadn't fallen back fast enough......my T-34s helped a little too
By the time this turn was over, he was down to 9-2 GO, with his mandatory bodyguard, 8-1 heroic observer, and one other squad.
EVERYONE else was broken...ouch......
TURN 4.
The 10-3 enters. Cue star wars music. THINK DARTH VADER.
this turkey dodged 3 SANs, 2 KIAs and a wound happening in hexes around him during the next two game turns.
But hey, I shouldn't carp...
one of those KIAs zapped his 8-0 manning the radio with the 150OBA...
another KIA was vs. a tank that was recalled for MA disabled....
the wound pinned a 838 thus hurting his fires....
They get to the HILL 621 summit, and set up house....CX of course...
I in turn get a 527 to a level 3 hex three hexes away, and these guys begin a duel of the century rolling lots of 3s and 4s on MCs ie both him and me....
I man his abandoned HMG, I start TRYING to surround the 9-2 and two 467s that are on the other hill of board 2. He zaps a T-34 with a PF in the process, breaks more of my squads, but in turn has one of these squads get broken.
I also rush his heroic observer. He stops using the radio, fires at 2-1, can't get it to work, and gets KIAed in CC....the observer that is....
TURN 5...
By this time, we've exchanged a LOT of troops with each other.
I'm down to 2 T-34s, one with MALFed MA.
He's down to 3 PzIVs, with one recalled to due MALFed MA....
not a lot of Germans on the hill other then the 838s
I rolled the MALFed T34 into the hex with the 8-0 with the 150MM OBA
the other T34 is on the road on board 2 b/w the two hill masses...
My reinforcements come on board.....
Su152 HD where the KIA T34 was HD...
others on hill 522 on board 3 so that they have LOS (at 20 plus hexes) to
his killing machine PzIV and other troops...
The PzIV gets the HD Su 152....OUCH...
but can't hit anything else.....
He ZAPS the T34 with MALFed MA, and in turn tries rushing the other T34 with his two PzIVs...
First one dies when I roll a 3 on the TH (using APCR) and a 4 on the TK...
Second one dies when I IF and roll a 5 on the TH (again with APCR) and a 6 on the TK, at 1 hex range.....so I Have a tank killing machine in one of my tanks...
and he's down to ONE PzIV....
He also moves a STGIII adjacent to this T34--he wants this guy DEAD...and misses......
He concedes on turn 6 after I
--KIA the StGIII with my T34 (that's 3 kills for that one crew...)
--KIA his PzIV killing machine with a Su122 HEAT round (at 22 hexes)
--KIA his 10-3 when he assault moves in the open agin my 527 STILL holding out on the one level 3 hex I managed to get and hold...
AFTER the game, I counted a rousing 16 GO squads of my initial OB left...everyone else is BROKEN... with only about 4 KIA, still yuck......
A GREAT scenario to play from either side...
The game breaker for him was getting only ONE OBA shot off.
IN TURN, my closing ASAP with him, though costing me many broken units (I really was nickel and dimed by his fires looking back at it...)
ANYWAYS, that allowed me to win as the soviet...
And now, NO ASL for a week and 3 days...next game is from GKELLNs GD pack FIRE BRIGADES....
